What alcohol should be used when replacing bands? I heard that certain types of alcohol can damage the bands?
I was planning to use methylated spirits (95% ethanol) would this be suitable?

I shouldn't be responding... as I have only just replaced my first set! However, I'll tell you what I did. I went to the local drugstore and saw there were different types, including the 90-95% solution. Remembering directions I had read which had specified "rubbing alcohol", I selected an alcohol that said "rubbing alcohol" (they all don't) on the label, and also 75%. My reasoning for going with the 75% solution, was that perhaps it wouldn't evaporate too quickly, giving me more time for adjusting the bands during installation. The installation went very easily, and yes, I had plenty of time to adjust the bands. Of course, I did let the slingshot sit for 24 hrs before using it so it would be sure to be dry. The bands haven't deteriorated yet... and it's been almost a full week! ;) Hopefully, someone more knowledgable will now reply! :)

It doesn't really matter. I use old desinfectant. You can also use non-gelly firestarter spiritus.

I personally like the Rubbing alcohol best. That's probably because that's all I ever used! Flatband:D

well i gave the methylated spirits a go seems to be fine to me at the moment. haven't shot it yet but i have drawn it and seems to be fine. Mind you adjusting the bands so they sit right isn't as ezy as it sounds for a first timer...lol

Hey JoJo,when they're using alcohol,it's to put tubes on a bent rod slingshot like the Wrist-Rocket(WS-1) or the Black Widow etc.Slingshots like that with aluminum rod frames. It makes them slip on easy. Flatband:)

Another to replace the tube bands is to insert a smaller paint brush or phillips screwdriver into the tube and then roll the tube up on the brush or whatever. Then carefully remove the brush, place the rolled up tube on the tip of the slingshot fork and unroll it on to the slingshot. Once it is on, you are ready to shoot. This is a techique that takes some practice but is neat when it works. I have a tool box full of different sized brushes, screwdrivers, etc. This techique was written up (with pictures) in a past issue of Modren Catapultry.
If you would like a copy of that article send me a SASE and I will send it to you. Check my web site for address. www.slingshots.net

I've been using Budweiser, but I just figured out that you're supposed to put it on the bands, heh heh.

alcohol doesn't work for me as it evaporates quickly in tropical climate. i use light silicon grease instead

Hi Sling,I wouldn't use the silicon on the posts. If you can't use Alcohol then try plain water and let it set overnight. Any kind of slippery substance is not what you want on the prongs under the tubes. Flatband:eek:

Hi all
No wonder the alcohol isn't working , I thought you where supposed to drink it first , so you could REALLLY GET A GRIP on the bands and streach them over ... Now I get it .
hahahahhaha

try using metholated spirits to fit bands by soaking them for like 5 seconds & then straight away fit them fast, theres like no setting time & it works well.

It is good to drink Old Grand Dad 100 proof when changing bands and many other tasks but it is not to good for accuracy when shooting.:)

in-a-pinch i've used after shave and even windex , the real trick is
drying/evaporation time , tubing is porous and that is what i take in
condieration before using the shooter ( my minimum is @ 15-20 min.)
plus a couple of try fires;)

I use hairspray.
Slick at first, sticky after a few minutes. Works great for me
