How does a good slingshot marksman compare with a good hand gun marksman? What kind of a group can a guy shoot with a hand gun at 10 meters?

Oh, I've shot hand guns in the past and I suck at it. I'm much better with the slingshot but I wonder how the best slingshooter compares with the best pistoleer

If you are talking about national champion verses nayionial champion, the slingshot shooter does not fair well. Having said that, the local police deptment declined my challange to a match after seeing me shoot. Bill

The typical target of an European slingshot tournament is 10cm (4") diameter, distance 10 meters (33 feet), knockdown plate. A skilled shooter will hit about 50%, a really good shooter about 75%, and a top shooter 90% or more.

Here's the reuslt of a Czech tournament: 3 rounds @ 10 shots, the first round actually has 13 shots for starting aid, but one can not exceed the ten points:

Comparing it to a pistol..well, a single-shot Feinwerkbau match air pistol or a .38 snubnose?

With either pistol, a top shooter could do much better than the slingshot scores.

Handgun wins by a large margin. And the margin increases with range. With a slingshot, it's easier to hit a 4-inch target at 50 feet than a 16-inch target at 200 feet, because of the difficulty in judging drop at the longer range.

On the other hand, I have used my slingshot to embarass some really poor handgun shooters who couldn't hit beer cans at close range.

In a 1951 Popular Mechanics mag. in a article called "Return of the Giant Killer"
"Milligan himself uses a three-foot pull, which gives the ball terrific velocity and a very flat trajectory. On one memorable occasion he fired a match against a Detroit police team on a ten-foot target range. He used his slingshot and the police used revolvers. Milligan won!"

Although I am not as shot in as well as this right now, I have hit a 4 inch circle 27 times in a row at 20 meters and 57 times at ten meters. That was not in a tournament. In a tournament (2004) the best target that I ever shot was a 25 yard pistol target at 25 meters in witch I put all my shots in the black bull and 3 in the ten ring. I can shoot a slingshot better that a pistol and I shot expert, when qualifying in the service. I have also had a match with a pistol shooter and won, but I think that was because the pressure got to him. I had a friend when I was young (he was a national champion with a pistol) and I don’t think any slingshot shooter would have a chance against him. By the way he was a good slingshot shooter also and a mountain of a man. -- Bill

i am not an expert but a regular person can shoot a pattern about the size of your head with a pistol. however a regular person would be lucky to hit a pattern the size of your torso with a slingshot. in conclusion slingshots take alot more skill and practice

I have taught people to shoot a 7 inch group at ten meters in less than a hour with a slingshot, if they have some shooting experience. -- Bill

That's what I was thinking, too.

I'm only an average handgun shooter - I can shoot 3"-4" at 25 yards, so probably could do 1.5" at 10 meters. Some of my friends could probably have all holes touching.

As an average slingshot shooter, I might hit pie plates at 25 yards, but wouldn't bet money on anything smaller. On a good day, I might be close to 50% on cans at 10 meters. It's very subjective, I have both good and bad days because I haven't practiced much lately.

I grew up shooting rifles and was pretty good, but I can't and never have been able to hit the broad side of a barn with a pistol...
I picked up a slingshot after 30 yrs and can more often than not hold a 12 in. pattern at 10 yrds or so. That's not great but far better than I can do with a pistol
It all comes down to the person.

I've learned from older more experienced shooters that if you're having a tough day shooting, don't keep struggling and getting frustrated, give up for a few hours or the until the next day and come back with fresh eyes. It really works!:)Flatband

It depend how well trained both are.

Give me about 30 minutes with most slingshot shooters that will follow instructions and I will have them shooting a 6 or 7 inch group at 10 meters. They must have good enough strength not to shake pulling 13 pounds though. -- Bill

I call for a shootout! LOL!
Kidding aside, I think slingshots are going to take more skill. Like most of the above posters, I think a regular dude can shoot a gun at a target 10 meters away, probably not as accurate as a real shooter though. But if you give 'em a slingshot, chances are, some of them aren't even going to reach the 10meter mark, more or so they're probably just going to miss or hit the target with the absence of power.

For those who have no time or desire to practice, there is always the slingshot crossbow. You can make one with a BOM of just about 20 dollars, and household tools. No way you can do that with a firearm.

Ive done both. I have a 4 3/8" barrel 22 cal colt and at 10 yds I can shoot under 1/2" groups, not all the time mind you but alot of times. my best being 3/8" and wose being 1". Can a slingshot shooter deliver a 1/4" shot or 3/8" shot 5 times in under an inch at ten yards. And Im just an amateur pistol shooter. AT further yardage I have shot 1" groups at 25 yards. Now with a 45 colt Ive shot 5 shots in 1.5-2" at 20 yards .I doubt most slingshooters can keep 5 shots at 20 yards in 2".Again Im an amateur pistol shot. But That doesnt mean you couldnt hit a 2" circle at 20 yds once the first time either!

I am a fair shot with a rifle, pistol, shotgun, compound bow and blowgun. I think my experience with the bow and blowgun will carry me farther in shooting a slingshot (which I just picked up after a 30 year hiatus) then the other shooting sports would. Release, follow-through etc. Just an opinion. I know I'll never hit with a slingshot like I can with my Beretta Neos .22, but maybe I can get close to what I can do with my P3AT. Time will tell.
